What installers need to do differently
The practical message for 2026 is to stop relying on motor settings and presumed conformity, and to start treating every installation as a piece of machinery you are placing on the market. Where force limitation is your primary safety measure, you must verify it objectively after installation and keep the evidence. The following changes in practice separate compliant installers from those exposed to prosecution.

Force limits in the standard are ceilings, not targets. The HSE position is that forces should be kept as low as is practicable, and that where safety edges are correctly fitted you should expect to record values well below the permitted limits. A reading that scrapes under the limit is not, on its own, evidence of good design; it is the floor of what is acceptable, and an inspector will want to see the wider risk assessment behind it.
Acting as the 'manufacturer' of an in-situ gate
When you build a powered gate on site from components, you are, in regulatory terms, the manufacturer of that machine. That carries specific duties: issuing a Declaration of Conformity, applying UKCA or CE marking where applicable, and supplying user instructions that include the test details. Treat the instrument, the operator's competence and the calibration record as a single package: any weak link undermines the evidence.

Specifiers and clients are responding accordingly, increasingly mandating DHF-member contractors, full test certificates and detailed O&M manuals. Treat the gate as machinery, keep the evidence, and re-test as part of routine maintenance.
